The Importance of Community Integration
Addiction and mental health disorders affect individuals and families everywhere. Encore believes that treatment providers can act as positive members of their communities by sharing insight and resources to educate individuals, families, and organizations. Reducing the stigma that prevents people from seeking care requires education so that people understand that addiction is a chronic health condition that requires treatment and raising awareness of addiction, treatment, and recovery. This is why we strongly recognize the importance of community integration.
Community is central to a healthy recovery. Addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders can lead to feelings of disconnectedness and isolation. The lifestyle of active addiction can damage relationships and alienate family, friends, and supporters. Recovery emphasizes reconnection with a community of positive supporters. Many people in recovery also find life-long friendship and camaraderie in specialized support groups and 12-Step programs.
